Reports from news site The Verge, suggest that Valve (the company behind Steam and the popular Half-Life series) could be entering the hardware business with a new games console type device. The rumored device’s name is “Steam Box” and comes from the popular Steam gaming platform, used by many PC gamers.
The specs of this device are not too shabby either, with a Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB Ram and a Nvidia graphics card it looks like the Steam box could prove to be a lot more powerful than current or future consoles from the likes of Microsoft and Sony. In addition, Valve is also said to be working on USB peripherals for the device, specifically USB controllers, possibly similar to what we have seen for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
In terms of games, it is said that the Steam Box will have access to the vast numbers of games, already available on the Steam network.
With the announcement of the device said to be soon (possibly as early as next week), it will be interesting to see how the concept develops and how it will affect console gaming as we know it today.
Tell us your thoughts in the forums. Do you think conventional consoles such as the Xbox and Playstation stand a chance against a device like this? Or is the way we play games about to change?
